Barga
An Ancient hilltop town in the Garfagnana region of Tuscany

View of BargaThe picturesque and lively town of Barga is situated at the base of the Appennine Mountains, 410 meters above sea level, a forty minute drive from Lucca.  Barga vecchia (the old town) is a charming network of narrow streets, archways and winding stairways, containing several cafes, restaurants, shops, and a theatre. Barga Giardino (the new town) offers many shops, restaurants, a cinema, public swimming pool, and a Saturday morning market. There is a Sunday antique market in Barga once a month.

Barga grew up around an ancient Lombard castle and its medeival wall is still intact. Besieged at different times by both Pisa and Lucca, Barga eventually became part of the Florentine state and stayed so until 1859.

Barga's crowning glory is the Duomo, from which one can enjoy stunning views over the  surrounding rooftops, terraced hills and distant mountains.
